He doesn't have to. You may have to wait until trial to finish the divorce if he responded. If he didn't respond you can get a default judgment after 90 days from the date of service.

When an engagement is broken off, who is entitled to the engagement ring?

Answered by attorney Monica H. Donaldson Stewart
Divorce lawyer at Donaldson Stewart, P.C.
Generally speaking, the engagement ring is a gift "in contemplation of marriage." If the marriage occurs and is then dissolved, the recipient keeps the ring. If the marriage never occurs, the ring should be returned to the person who gave it.

Can my daughter get alimony if she was a stay at home mom? How?

Answered by attorney John F Brennan (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Musilli Brennan Associates, PLLC
There are a number of factors which are taken into account in determining whether or not alimony is reasonable or required. I would suggest that if you daughter is considering divorce and would like to have an understanding of the likely consequences to her, that she engage or at least counsel with an attorney providing all of the facts.
