How can I get a divorce without an attorney and my husband refuses to sign the divorce papers?

Answered by attorney Julie Anne Ringquist (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Law Office of Julie A. Ringquist
If your husband won't sign divorce papers (I assume you mean a settlement agreement), you need to go forward with a Default Judgment. If he has not been personally served with the initial divorce papers, then you need to have him professionally served. Once he has been served, if he doesn't respond within 30 days, you can move forward with the case by Default Judgment. There is a specific process for each move he makes or doesn't make. There is specific paperwork that must be filed and prepared. If you think you can do it, most family law courts in California have self-help centers available, they cannot give legal advice or actually prepare your paperwork, but they can help point in in the right direction to the right forms. If you really cannot handle that, then you will have to hire an attorney. There are many attorneys, including myself, who can be hired for a much reduced rate to prepare your paperwork without actually representing you in court.

Will I be entitled to anything if I divorce my ex in Yemen with whom I have lived with in the US for 6 years?

Answered by attorney Vicki S. Vasser (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Wright, Lindsey & Jennings LLP
If you are seeking a divorce in Yemen, you will need to seek legal counsel in Yemen. I suspect there are certain residency requirements in order to file for divorce in Yemen. I would also anticipate that your spouse, who is in the US, would be entitled to notice of the proceeding (regardless of where divorce is initiated). I would strongly encourage you to seek guidance of a legal professional in Yemen if you are seeking divorce in that country.

How do I make a written request to get a divorce copy?

Answered by attorney Barbara Peyton (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Peyton & Associates
Contact the court and ask how much a copy will cost. Then send a letter with a pre-addressed return envelope with postage on it to the court along with a check for copy costs. Sometimes it is easier to hire a runner to go to the court and have a copy made. Good luck.
