An Introduction to Divorce Law
Each state has its own requirements for completing a divorce, which is the legal ending of a marriage. If the spouses agree to a divorce settlement, a judge must review and approve it. If the two parties can't agree, the judge will make decisions on property division and, if there are children, the sharing of parenting.
Complex rules, contentious relationships, and having children are among the reasons that consulting a lawyer often makes sense for someone who is divorcing. Experienced lawyers are aware of long-term consequences of decisions and strategies in the divorce process. They can also manage communication, serving as a buffer in what is usually an emotionally difficult time.
