After 25 years of being a lawyer, my law practice is based on a simple idea: I want to help people. Nothing gives me greater joy as a lawyer than helping people during their toughest situations. Recently, after winning a wrongful termination/whistleblower retaliation lawsuit, I was able to hug my clients and tell them the jury believes in you and just awarded each of you a substantial sum. Every case is different, and most settle prior to trial, but I am always guided by the simple principle of helping others. My second daughter, who just graduated from law school, was asked by her campus newspaper why she wanted to be a lawyer. She shared a memory of when she was young. It seems she heard me on the phone when I was at home talking with a client. I was reassuring the client that her family didn’t have to worry about taking care of her kids because we were able to gain the requested settlement. My daughter said that over-hearing this call was when she decided to become a lawyer because lawyers help people. When she shared that story with me, I realized that helping people was my unwritten mission statement for years.
