Will a misdemeanor petty theft go on my record?

Yes. You will want to get a lawyer as soon as possible. They hopefully will be able to negotiate a plea that will keep it off your record, or go to trial to fight the charges.

Can I purchase a handgun in California if I have a suspended license?

You cannot buy a handgun without valid identification. You generally do need a valid, non-expired California Driver's License, but an Identification Card is also acceptable for a DROS application. You should apply for and obtain one. The cost is about $25. I do not believe that the mere fact of your suspended license status disqualifies you from handgun ownership.

If it isn't your money, if the deposit was a mistake, using it would be a crime and grounds for a lawsuit if you don't repay the owner.
