I am 18 and in highschool. In a criminal case (organized crime) the judge did not appoint me a public attorney. That was Thursday. How do I get one?

Answered by attorney Kenneth G. Wincorn
Criminal Law lawyer at Law Offices of Kenneth G. Wincorn & Associates, P.C.
Why did the judge say he was not appointing someone? Usually the reason is that you or your family can afford to hire an attorney on your own. In most cases this is the best course of action to get the best representation you can. Because of your age, it is possible that the court is trying to get you to hire an attorney who can spend the time necessary to represent you adequately. How this case is handled will effect the rest of your life and age may be a positive factor in keeping from having a record that you cannot recover from.

Should I turn myself in to the police?

Answered by attorney Jason William Savela
Criminal Law lawyer at The Savela Law Firm, P.C.
You should refuse to talk with the police and specifically request an attorney. Do not say anything except I want an attorney. There are no charges yet, so you cannot turn yourself in. There may never be charges, especially if you say nothing. The cops probably want to threaten you with charges so that they can find out your supplier or to use you to buy drugs to get others in trouble. Call their bluff. It sounds to me like they have little proof of possession and/or use. These charges can be reduced to misdemeanors with probation. Do not let the cops scare you.
