Apparently you presume that there is something else you can do than to pay the court costs and fines associated with the case against you. There is not, and you are mistaken.

Any misdemeanor carries up to a year in jail. Have him apply for the public defender, who should make sure he gets appropriate medical care if the jail fails to do so.

You can let the DA know that you do not wish to proceed. This will help however, the DA will drag the case out a bit and possibly try to prove the case without your testimony (sometimes possible through admissions of the defendant in the case and whatever is on the 911 tape).
