How does having a criminal record sealed work?

Criminal Law lawyer at R. Jason de Groot, P.A.
First you hire an attorney. Second the attorney makes a motion to seal the records. Third the judge signs an order which requires the police department and all other entities to seal the records. It just means that it is no longer part of the public record. Then comes expungement.

What can I do to protect myself from a slanderous rumor but I have no calculable damages, so I don't want to pursue a civil suit?

This is not a criminal defense question, but a civil law question. Organize this into something coherent, by stating what happened in a chronological order. Explain yourself further. The best thing to do is not rely upon asking a question on the internet and hoping to get an answer. Organize it all and go speak with an attorney. So what if it is harassment? There is no cause of action in FL for harassment, as far as I know. Defamation of character does not require that you come to a conclusion that you have compensable damages, leave that to an attorney who knows all the facts. From what you have written, I cannot tell whether you might have the ability to seek a repeat violence injunction, which by the way, does not require violence.

Is the case closed for now until he gets out of rehab or is it closed for good?

It is closed for now until he gets out of rehab. The court will probably consider that he went to rehab. He still needs to get an attorney for this.
