You can do your own background check for a small fee. Google livescan offices near you and call them. You will need to fill out a form and pay a small fee. You will also need to bring an ID with you. Once you have that you will know what you need to clean up. You cannot seal a DUI conviction but you can get it dismissed per 1203.4 (California's version of an expungement). That will add an entry into your DOJ background check that will say the case is dismissed. The Deferred Entry of Judgement should already be off your record if you successfully completed it.

An Additional $40,000? I don't know the details about the case, but that certainly seems pricey. What did your original retainer consist of, a flat fee or hourly rate? Are the additional counts part of the same Complaint? or is there a separate complaint that has the other charges. A retainer that goes until a certain date (as opposed to a certain part of the Court hearings (ie. through preliminary, through trial...etc) seems odd. I am sure there is a lot more to this story, but based on what you wrote, one option would be to hire another attorney that may be more in your price range.
