How much would an attorney cost in a criminal case?

I would suspect about $2500 to $5000 but would have to have the details to give a firm quote. You are generally better off with an hourly rate as, if we a going to take a risk on a flat fee, I must charge a premium for the risk.

Get your attorney first. Theft charges are very serious and can result in permanent criminal records.

I am NOT on probation and I do NOT have to go to court what could happen if I am not able to pay the court fees?

If you do not pay the court costs and fees you will eventually have to go back to the court and explain why. Depending on the charge, you may have entered upon your record of failure to appear in court or failure to comply with judgment, neither of them are good and potentially could cause a bench warrant to issue for your arrest.
