What should I do after being charged for two counts of shoplifting?

Answered by attorney Stephen Lewis Freeborn (Unclaimed Profile)
Criminal Law lawyer at Freeborn Law Offices P.S.
You say you have learned your lesson, Is that because you finally got caught? Shoplifting is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $5,000.00.... on each count. You have 2 counts. Whether a judge imposes that kind of a sentence is up to the judge based upon the facts of the case. However, even if you were to get little or no jail time, two convictions for theft on your record is going to be bad.. employers don't want to hire people they can't trust. You don't say how old you are. If you are in college, or planning to go to college, a criminal conviction could get you expelled from the college, or prevent your entry into college. If you are looking to get federal loans, a criminal conviction will disqualify you from certain loans. My advice to you is to hire an attorney. He/she may be able to do something to keep a conviction from being entered. There are lots of thing that can be done... if you have a clean record. Do not do this on your own.

It will stay on your record forever unless you have the conviction set aside by way of a motion in the court where your conviction occured.

Criminal Law lawyer at Mark A. Manning, P.C.
If you were driving without a license, this is a criminal offense. Your fine could be up $500 and or 90 days in jail or both. If you are going to Court tomorrow it is either for an arraignment or a pre trial I assume. Obtain an Attorney who can assist you in resolving the matter.
