Sean P. Kelly brings to Cavanagh Law Group more than a decade of trial experience he will use to fight for victims of medical malpractice, unsafe driving and other negligent conduct. As a prosecutor in DuPage County’s criminal and civil bureaus, Kelly prosecuted thousands of cases — never losing a felony jury trial.
Kelly joined Cavanagh Law Group as an associate in May 2019, after 13 years at the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. At Cavanagh Law Group, Kelly will leverage his extensive trial experience to continue to protect the rights of victims as a powerful advocate inside the courtroom and out.
During his time with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Kelly prosecuted countless drug, DUI and fatal crash cases. He fought for the rights of abused and neglected children in his role as an assistant state’s attorney in the Juvenile Division. In 2015, Kelly conducted the felony review investigation into a fatal Burr Ridge motorcycle crash on I-55 caused by a driver so high on heroin that he went into a coma. That man was later sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Kelly was a member of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office Special Prosecutions Bureau, where he litigated complex financial cases. He also worked with the Sexually Violent Persons Unit, keeping the community safe from violent sexual predators.
The son of an Irish immigrant, Kelly grew up in the western suburbs and attended Marmion Academy in Aurora. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2001, and graduated from The John Marshall Law School in 2005. Kelly is a member of the Illinois State Bar (2006), Illinois State Bar Association, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, Chicago Bar Association and DuPage County Bar Association.
He lives on the North Side of Chicago with his wife Erica and their two children. Kelly is active in the community, volunteering at his children’s school and with PAWS Chicago.
