Juan R. Thomas is Of Counsel at Clifford Law Offices and a nationally recognized leader in the legal and civic community. Previously, he served as Founder and Principal Partner of The Thomas Law Group for nearly 25 years, representing clients throughout Illinois in civil litigation and estate matters. Earlier in his career, he served as Labor Counsel to Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, advising on labor, employment, and collective bargaining matters.Thomas currently serves on the American Bar Association Board of Governors and is President of the National Conference of Bar Presidents for the 2026–27 bar year. He previously served as the 75th President of the National Bar Association, where he led initiatives focused on voter justice, diversity, inclusion, and civic engagement.In 2024, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Thomas to the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission Review Board. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois College of Law. His numerous honors include the ABA’s 2024 Spirit of Excellence Award and recognition among the National Black Lawyers Top 100 Trial Lawyers.

The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings process is the gold standard due to its objectivity and comprehensiveness. Lawyers solicited for peer reviews include both those selected by the attorney being reviewed and lawyers independently selected by Martindale-Hubbell. All reviewers are verified as attorneys through Martindale-Hubbell’s extensive attorney database. Only attorneys practicing at least three years and receiving a sufficient number of reviews from non-affiliated attorneys are eligible to receive a Rating.

What are the different Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings?*

• AV Preeminent®: The highest peer rating standard. This rating signifies that a large number of the lawyer’s peers rank him or her at the highest level of professional excellence for their legal knowledge, communication skills and ethical standards.

• Distinguished: An excellent rating for a lawyer with some experience. This rating indicates the attorney is widely respected by their peers for high professional achievement and ethical standards.
