Jim Hickmon has over 20 years of estate planning experience. His primary focus is complex estate planning and post-mortem (after death) planning.

Jim has been certified as a N.C. State Bar Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the N.C. State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.

Jim’s professional passion is assisting clients with mentally ill or challenged family members prepare estate plans to protect family members and family wealth.

Closely held and family business owners rely on Jim to ensure that family businesses stay within families and develop succession planning to avoid a loss of the business at the primary owner’s death. He has assisted families in many industries plan their estates, including farmers and ranchers, towing and trucking companies, real estate developers, software developers and many others.

Jim has particularly strong experience in working with clients’ other advisors, including accountings, investment advisors, real estate experts, corporate counsel, family offices, insurance advisors and others. This “team approach” produces the best outcome for our clients.

Jim was raised and grew up in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach where he graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in Business Administration and Finance. He was a trust administration officer for Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo) and First Citizens Bank and Trust Company, during which time he earned his MBA from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. He graduated from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 2001 and continues to teach Wealth Transfer and Fiduciary Income Tax as an adjunct professor at Wake Law.

In 1996, Jim graduated from the College for Financial Planning and has earned the designation of Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. The combination of his law degree, MBA and CFP® designation makes Jim particularly well suited to advising his clients regarding retirement plan assets (401(k) and IRA accounts), insurance policies and the proper titling of assets.

When Jim is not working in his office, he enjoys landscaping and gardening, traveling with his wife Alison, writing and public speaking. I had never hired a lawyer and it was an extremely difficult time for our family. I could not have chosen better. Jim and his entire staff are kind, caring, and thoroughly knowledgeable on what can be done. I always felt my case was important to them and that they were doing their best for me at all times. Jim prepares for all outcomes no matter how remote. He's a fighter but also an excellent listener, hearing what you say as well as what you're not saying. Jim will always tell you the truth!

Numerous attorneys said that Mr. Hickmon was the only person they would recommend for my complex multi-state legal issue. That speaks volumes about his professional reputation! He was thorough, thoughtful, and intelligent. Each step of my case had its own unique difficulty & Mr. Hickmon always knew exactly what to do. Based upon my work with other attorneys, I can attest that his vast legal knowledge, professionalism, and relatability are a rare combination so my resources were well spent.

I engaged Jim after a major investment firm froze all of my father’s assets, and subsequently the assets that I had with the firm as well. At 100 years of age my father had finally begun to succumb to a number of health issues. With diminished capacity as well as significant memory issues, he was declared incompetent. It was a very tough time for the family as you can imagine. My father had a revocable trust in place, and had removed the major investment firm as successor trustee the year before. The investment firm chose to ignore the provisions of the trust, and was not only cavalier about their actions but became virtually non-responsive. Jim engaged directly with the firm’s General Counsel and very appropriately got straight to the matter. Jim also engaged other members of his firm to assist, Christian Perrin specifically, and together they provided our family with excellent counsel and resolved all matters. The investment firm made things very complicated, but Jim resolved matters within 45 days. Jim’s approach was measured and extremely professional. His firm operates as a team, and we felt extremely well represented. Another member of the family is now likely to use their services for estate planning as well. I highly recommend Jim and the firm.
