Robert V. Berthold, Jr. has over 44 years of legal experience and a strong focus on medical malpractice cases, including birth and brain injuries. His practice also includes coal mining accidents, product liability, auto and trucking accidents, industrial incidents, and insurance bad faith claims. Notably, he served as co-counsel in a $50 million jury verdict in 2002, one of the top 100 verdicts in the United States that year. A respected member of the legal community, Mr. Berthold belongs to the American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only organization comprising just 1% of West Virginia attorneys. He was recognized as the 2015 Personal Injury Attorney of the Year in Charleston, WV, by The Best Lawyers in America and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Mr. Berthold graduated cum laude from West Virginia University in 1973 and earned his law degree there in 1976. His achievements include maintaining an AV® rating from Martindale-Hubbell® for 25 years. He has represented West Virginia in major cases, including litigation against Blue Cross Blue Shield and in municipal derivatives cases. Outside his practice, he serves on the Clay Center’s advisory board and as a Trustee at First Presbyterian Church in Charleston.
