I hired Shoemaker to represent me in a child custody case. He would not return my calls about my upcoming court date in which affidavits had to be submitted. A day before the court appearance I filed an application for extension for the court case considering that I didn't get a response and wasn't sure how to respond in the court case with out attorney. I had proof of my retainer and that Shoemaker had cashed it. After submitting the application for an extension, the clerk of court told me the judge wanted to meet with me in his quarters. The judge denied the extension and informed me to make sure I came to court the next day with or without Shoemaker. After I left the courthouse I received a call from Shoemaker asking if I was ready for the next day. I felt blindsided and had no choice but to show up for court without the appropriate affidavits and documentation. I fired Shoemaker and he never returned my evidence to support my case, even after my new attorney requested them.
I had a contract with Scott Shoemaker for guardianship of my son and he DID NOT fulfill our contract. He also has not returned my retainer of $500. He told me he had a job in Iowa City he could not turn down. He also told me he would do the paper work for the guardianship so I could take them to the court house, then he would send me what he would not use. I have not seen a penny. I am not the only one he has done this to. There are at least two other family's. His wife works with these kids.
