About John T. Loss

John T. Loss began his path to legal excellence in Western New York, where he grew up and completed his undergraduate studies. He graduated summa cum laude with All College Honors from Canisius College before moving on to the prestigious Cornell Law School. During his time at Cornell, John established himself as a brilliant legal scholar, finishing an impressive second in his graduating class and earning his Juris Doctor magna cum laude. His law school achievements were numerous, including serving as the managing editor of the Cornell Law Review, being inducted into the Order of the Coif, and winning the First Year Moot Court Competition. He was also recognized with several distinguished academic honors, such as the Corpus Juris Secundum Award and the Kerr Memorial Prize.Following law school, John secured a prestigious opportunity that would forever shape his professional worldview. He served as a federal law clerk to the Honorable Frank M. Johnson, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. John credits this formidable experience under a legendary jurist as a primary guiding influence in his legal career. He continues to deeply honor Judge Johnson’s legacy today by serving as a literary executor for the late judge's official papers housed at the Library of Congress.Transitioning into private practice, John built an extraordinary thirty-seven-year legal career characterized by vast trial, litigation, and appellate experience. Throughout more than three decades in the courtroom, he tried dozens of jury cases across a wide variety of legal matters. His diverse background includes defending healthcare providers in medical malpractice actions, representing various professionals in complex disciplinary proceedings, and advocating passionately for injured individuals facing intricate legal hurdles. In addition to his heavy trial schedule, John devoted a significant portion of his career to elite appellate work, mastering the art of crafting persuasive written briefs and presenting compelling oral arguments before appellate judges.John's deep legal knowledge eventually earned him a reputation as an authority on alternative dispute resolution within the state. Because of his extensive background and unwavering fairness, he was selected to serve as one of only four statewide evaluators for both No Fault and Supplemental Underinsured Motorist arbitrators. Over his decades of practice in civil litigation, John continuously refined his unique ability to break down highly complex legal scholarship and turn it into successful courtroom strategies, making him a highly respected figure among his peers.Today, John brings his monumental wealth of knowledge, motion experience, and appellate wisdom to Morgan & Morgan as Appellate and Motion Counsel in New York. In this specialized role, he collaborates closely with the litigation teams to analyze difficult legal hurdles, draft powerful motions, and champion clients' cases at the highest appellate levels. Known for his friendly demeanor, collaborative spirit, and lifelong commitment to the pursuit of justice, John is a fantastic addition to the team, and his exceptional skills serve as a tremendous asset to both our attorneys and the families we represent.
