the appellate court affirmed the merits of the resulting judgment.
Obtained dismissal of a wrongful death action filed in California state court by the parents of a student who was murdered by a classmate on campus at an out-of-state university. The action was dismissed for lack of personal jurisdiction.
Assisted in the successful defense of a public university hospitals medical staff in multiple challenges by a physician (who was a tenured faculty member) to the medical staffs summary suspension of all of his clinical privileges at the hospital. The summary suspension was upheld initially by a three-member peer review panel
again on appeal by the governing hospital board.
Achieved a defense victory for a private university in an action by a former professor who claimed that he had been defamed
damaged when his employment was terminated. His defamation claim was the only claim to survive dismissal at the initial pleading stage. Summary judgment was entered against him on that claim.
Obtained a judgment for a private university in a writ proceeding initiated by a former student who had been dismissed from the institution because of his repeated cheating in violation of its honor code.
Obtained a complete dismissal of a federal RICO
securities action pending in the Ohio district court against a Singapore client (seeking in excess of $1 billion arising from a failed real estate resort in Malaysia) with related litigation pending in the courts of the British Virgin Isl
