Matthew P. Cook joined Kerrick Bachert, PSC, in August 2017. He is a partner with the firm and has been in practice in Bowling Green since 1998. Matt handles a wide range of litigation matters, including general civil litigation, commercial and business litigation, employment law, professional malpractice, and insurance coverage disputes. He also provides guidance to governmental entities and businesses on contract drafting and compliance issues.
Matt received an B.A. with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1994. He obtained a J.D. cum laude from the University of Louisville, Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1998. Matt was admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association in 1998 and is also admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky. He has an AV Preeminent peer review rating through Martindale-Hubbell and was honored with the Kentucky Bar Association's Outstanding Young Lawyer Award in 2012.
Matt holds multiple positions within the legal community. He is a longtime member of the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Bar Association, currently serving as President Elect and will assume office as President of the KBA in 2026. He is a Life Member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference, and a Life Fellow of the Kentucky Bar Foundation. Matt is a past President of the Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Association and was the recipient of its Gwyneth B. Davis Outstanding Public Service Award in 2013.
In addition, Matt is a member of the American, Federal, Kentucky, Louisville, and Bowling Green-Warren County Bar Associations. He was appointed by the Chief Justice of Kentucky to serve as the Second Supreme Court District representative on the Kentucky Continuing Legal Education Commission from 2011-2016. Recently, he was nominated and accepted membership as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation. Matt has also chaired the KBA’s Budget and Finance Committee, its Audit Committee, and its Rules Committee. He is the author of a chapter on "Closing Arguments" in multiple editions of Kentucky Civil Practice at Trial for the University of Kentucky Continuing Legal Education Series.
In the community, Matt is a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of South Central Kentucky and of Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company of Kentucky. He previously served on the Site Based Decision Making Council of McNeill Elementary School and coached the Mock Trial Team at Western Kentucky University. He is a member of Broadway United Methodist Church in Bowling Green.
Matt is married to Melanie Kennedy Cook, who is a Senior Vice-President and Assistant General Counsel with Dollar General Corporation. The Cooks have two children, Andrew and Layne.
