Scott Ralston was my divorce attorney in the summer of 2023 as I came out of a long marriage with a partner with substance abuse, child neglect and financial incompetence issues. Unlike the attorney I'd wasted time and money with beforehand, Scott went hard on all of these topics during our mediation. He argued and won on awarding me & my children 18 months of back child support, my entire 401k (arguing that the bulk of it was mine before marriage, something my previous attorney would not pursue as she'd said it would be too hard to prove), and most outstanding of all, I got full custody of our children. This doesn't happen often; Scott pushed for my ex to get tested for alcohol use before spending overnights with him, and when he refused, he relinquished the right to have the minors in his care for longer visits. It was such a relief to feel that they were safe, and reassuring to know that the money I'd worked so hard to save for retirement would remain mine. Thanks Scott!
I cannot recommend hiring J. Scott Ralston as a family law attorney. Through a series of legal blunders, Scott greatly damaged my sister’s life. Scott gave a feckless defense of my sister, while her husband’s attorney went on the attack. Scott mostly remained silent while my sister’s husband was depicted as a paragon of virtue. Scott seemed unable or unwilling to fight for my sister’s interests. My sister’s abusive husband was awarded everything he wanted: he is still living in their 4,000 square foot house on two acres, and he has 50/50 custody of the children. He even has the children on their birthdays and almost all holidays. Meanwhile, my sister has been sleeping on the floor of our mother’s house, driving one hour each way to take her children to school. Through incompetence, self-defeating advice, and a tepid courtroom performance, Scott made a bad situation much worse. There are competent and effective family law attorneys; J. Scott Ralston is not one of them.
