Can I file bankruptcy for money owed to a University?

Richard B. Jacobson
Answered by attorney Richard B. Jacobson (Unclaimed Profile)
Bankruptcy lawyer at Richard B. Jacobson Associates, LLC
Student loans as such are not generally dischargeable in a bankruptcy. There is some authority that a debt owed directly to a university is not the kind of student loan excluded from the bankruptcy discharge. Since there are frequent changes in this law, you should consult a skilled bankruptcy lawyer.

What should I do after I cosigned for someone?

Answered by attorney Loren Paul Zahn (Unclaimed Profile)

If you co-signed for the loan, you are equally responsible for it. You should never cosign for a loan under these circumstances. I suggest speaking to the person who got the loan about paying their bill. Otherwise Sallie Mae will come after you.
