Do I owe property taxes if they were listed in my bankruptcy?

S. Christopher Hunter
Answered by attorney S. Christopher Hunter (Unclaimed Profile)

Property taxes are not discharged in a bankruptcy. This means they are not wiped out. Sadly you owe the money. Many Counties have programs to assist with paying your taxes. I would contact your county treasurer's office to find out what programs are available.

Can I file for bankruptcy and will it relieve him of responsibility or will he then be liable for the accounts he was on?

Please note that if you have joint debts then your finances are not exactly separated. In a divorce, both debts and assets are separated and it is possible that you may become responsible for debts that were discharged. This is a complicated matter and you would be wise to obtain a consultation in deciding if and when filing BK could be appropriate.
