One of the debt collection companies has now told me (via letter) that I have a civil hearing should I go?

This doesn't sound right. To be sued, you need to be properly served. A letter from the creditor is not sufficient. You need to call an attorney or a Legal Service organization in your state that represents those who can't afford attorneys.

Can anyone file this without notifying you or serving papers to appear in court for this?

In order to have obtained a judgment against you, you would have had to have been served. There are different types of service so you may not have had actual notice. You will need to review the court file to ascertain how service was (purportedly) effectuated (look for a proof of service) and this will give an attorney a basis for determining what your chances are of vacating the judgment against you.

If I rent can the sheriff still remove me if I have filed chapter 7?

Answered by attorney Marjorie A. Guymon
Bankruptcy lawyer at Goldsmith & Guymon, P.C.
If you are not current with your rent then they can evict you. The question is how long are you protected before they may do so. If they have the order for eviction they may do so immediately. The bk does not protect you.
