About Mr. Marshall Alan Thompson

Marshall Thompson was born in Corpus Christi but has called Austin home for more than ten years. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to graduate with honors from The University of Texas School of Law.

Marshall dedicates the majority of his practice to family law. He has handled all varieties of family law matters including divorce, child custody, paternity, child support, protective orders, post-divorce modifications and enforcements, termination/adoptions and interstate custody disputes. He has experience tackling the more contentious issues in family law, including disproportionate property divisions, spousal support, grandparents’ rights, interspousal tort actions, move-away cases, and cases involving substance abuse, child abuse and domestic violence.

Marshall also represents clients in federal income tax disputes with the IRS throughout the administrative appeals process and in proceedings before the United States Tax Court. He has a particular interest in the intersection of tax law and family law – including Injured Spouse and Innocent Spouse Relief and divorce planning to anticipate the tax implications of child support, alimony, property division and the transfer or sale of assets.

He is licensed to practice in Texas and is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Western and Southern Districts of Texas and the United States Tax Court. He is a member of the Austin Bar Association, the Williamson County Bar Association, the Austin Young Lawyers Association, and the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He serves on the board of the Allandale Neighborhood Association and volunteers as a mentor attorney for Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas and the Austin Bar Association Mentoring Program.

I’m surprised by the negative comments as my experience has been nothing but great in dealing with Mr. Thompson and his law firm. I believe Marshall is one of the best lawyers in Travis and surrounding counties. His court hearing demeanor is excellent in being prepared, on point addressing the true concerns (not rambling on about pointless issues), and is a great negotiator. Most of all, he doesn’t bend his ethics to take on bad clients. I highly recommend Marshall as a family law attorney.

Words can not express how grateful I am to have found Marshall Thompson. Reliability, integrity, responsiveness, reasonable rates, and endurance as well as unshakeable command of presence in the court room; Marshall has all of these and much more. Moreover, he practices good delegation in procedure, and has a knowledgeable and experienced paralegal. Marshall took my case at a very sensitive time. He handled every thing with honesty and integrity. If you are looking for an attorney that is ethical and knows how to properly approach a family conflict, in Williamson County court system, he is your attorney. In family court you don't need luck, you need Marshall. Arman

From start to finish he was there helping me navigate this extremely annoying, upsetting, and terrible divorce. Thanks to his guidance and expertise, I was able to get a very satisfactory settlement and he was very clear and concise with strategy so I knew mostly what was going on. He's extremely personable, kind, and a compassionate attorney.

Marshall and his team provided me great representation thru a difficult divorce. I ended up with a very fair judgement due largely to the fact that Marshall was far better than the opposing attorney. His knowledge of the county, the judge and the likely responses to the issues were paramount to our good outcome. I would highly recommend him

Marshall Thompson is a great family attorney who has helped me with a long standing and high conflict court case. He has a great courtroom presence while advocating for me in front of the judge. He spends time preparing for my case and understands how important the court’s decisions will impact my child’s life. I’m so grateful for Mr. Thompson’s knowledge and expertise. My trial outcomes have been positive with him as my lawyer.

I highly recommend hiring Marshall Thompson. His knowledge and experience of family law helped me with a custody issue. Throughout this whole process, he helped me understand the pros and cons of each step. I was very nervous going to court but I am so glad I had Marshall Thompson as my lawyer. We were able to communicate via emails to schedule phone calls. This process was necessary due to busy work schedules. I have complete trust with this lawyer and am grateful for all of his advice. Overall, I am very happy with the hiring and would gladly hire again.

It should be 0 stars, because he took my money and disappeared. I was suppose to show up to court, but because Marshall never returned my emails or calls ( after taking my $5K of course ) , I never knew about it. I have no idea how someone could take your money and screw you over at your worst moment and still live with themselves. I truly don't understand how anyone could be so heartless.

Working with Marshall has been the worst experience during an already traumatic time. His attention is extremely inconsistent and sporadic, at best. I've had to resort to endless begging and pleading for updates to my case, with zero response. Marshall has abandoned me for months on end without any updates, and when he finally gets around to responding, he conjures lies that are meant to excuse the delays in a feeble attempt at protecting himself. After my hearing for emergency full custody in April, he was responsible for drafting the orders and filing them in a reasonable amount of time. As of today (NOVEMBER), they have YET to be filed. My divorce itself had been delayed for well over a year due to his non-responsiveness to both me and opposing counsel. Marshall is incredibly disorganized, has taken on too many cases, doesn't have enough paralegal staff to offload tasks, has very questionable business practices (google his name), and is NOT an honest or communicative person.
