Attorney David Gordon brings a steady hand to his work in criminal defense, child protective defense, and civil matters. Known for his clear communication and thoughtful advocacy, David is committed to helping his clients navigate some of the most challenging moments in their lives with confidence and clarity. His approach is grounded in practical courtroom experience and a deep understanding of how the legal system works from varying angles.
David earned his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law and began his career serving as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable John C. McKeon of the Montana Seventeenth Judicial District Court. His time behind the scenes gave him valuable insight into how judges make decisions and strengthened his legal research and writing skills. He then went on to serve as a prosecutor in two jurisdictions, handling a wide range of cases from charging decisions through trial. That experience honed his courtroom advocacy, strategic thinking, and ability to see cases from multiple perspectives.
David worked in private practice at a civil litigation firm in West Virginia, where he worked on complex disputes with a sharp focus on legal writing, motion practice, and advancing client interests. This diverse background allows David to bring both depth and flexibility to his work at Steve Smith Trial Lawyers, where he is dedicated to standing by his clients every step of the way—whether negotiating a resolution or preparing for trial.
David’s academic background adds an additional layer to his practice. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from San Diego State University, a master’s degree in theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville, and doctoral credits in political science from University of Mississippi, where he also served as a teaching assistant. This foundation in social science and the humanities informs his thoughtful, people-first approach to the law.
Outside of the courtroom, David is a devoted husband and father who values time spent with family. He’s also an avid chess player and waterfowl hunter—pursuits that reflect both his strategic mind and his love of the outdoors.
