Charles Rothermel is a leading advocate for victims of personal injury and medical negligence, with a particular focus on dental malpractice. As co-chair of the firm’s Dental Malpractice Group, Charles brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to those seriously harmed by the negligent care of dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, endodontists, orthodontists, prosthodontists, periodontists, pediatric dentists and dental anesthesiologists. His practice is dedicated to securing justice for victims of medical malpractice, personal injury and wrongful death, with a significant portion of his work concentrated on complex dental malpractice cases.
Charles handles serious cases involving inferior alveolar nerve injury, lingual nerve injury, failure to diagnose oral cancer, severe dental infections and significant restorative errors such as improperly performed dental implants and root canals, excessive orthodontic treatment causing serious injury, wrongful extraction of teeth and more. His advanced medical knowledge, specifically in the realm of dental and medical malpractice, enables him to construct robust litigation strategies tailored to the unique circumstances of each client, to reach the best possible outcomes.
Prior to devoting more attention to dental malpractice, Charles developed a profound passion for cases involving a blend of legal and medical analysis while litigating maritime personal injury claims in New Orleans. The Federal and General Maritime Law that protect maritime workers, different from those that apply to accidents occurring on land, make maritime cases more complex and require counsel very knowledgeable with the nuances of this area of the law.
A respected figure in the legal community, Charles is a regular lecturer at continuing education seminars. He serves as the chairperson for a popular annual technology CLE at the Fairfax County Courthouse. In this role, he educates other attorneys on the use of advanced courtroom technology. Of course, Charles puts these talents to use at trial on behalf of his own clients.
Charles is licensed to practice in Virginia, Louisiana and Washington, D.C., including federal courts in Virginia and Louisiana. He is an active member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, American Association for Justice, Alexandria Bar Association, Trial Lawyers Association of D.C. and the Fairfax Bar Association, where he served as co-chair of the Law Practice Management Section from 2016-2019. He is a fellow of the Fairfax Law Foundation and a student pilot member of the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Association.
At Tulane University Law School, Charles was a published member of the Maritime Law Journal, the preeminent student-edited law journal in the field of Admiralty and Maritime Law. He developed his passion for litigation as a competitor and coach for multiple national mock trial competitions, and he served on the Moot Court Board. His mock trial success earned him the honor of being inducted to the Order of Barristers.
Prior to law school, Charles earned his BFA in Musical Theatre from Tulane University in New Orleans. He has performed extensively on stage in musicals and theatrical productions, as well as in television and film projects. He has contributed vocals, guitar and keyboards in rock bands and once toured Europe as a singer/folk dancer.
In his personal life, Charles enjoys exploring the great outdoors with his family, indulging in hobbies such as hiking, camping and boating. Charles currently performs with multiple ensembles, most notably the Alexandria Harmonizers, a distinguished men’s a cappella chorus renowned for their exceptional musicality and dynamic performances, often participating in national and international competitions and events. Charles can also be found giving solo performances throughout the year.
