BAR ADMISSIONS
I am an active member of the Bars of the District of Columbia, Massachusetts and Maine and am therefore licensed to represent clients residing in all three jurisdictions and to provide advice with respect to the laws of the three jurisdictions, as well as federal law. I am also a member of the Bars of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine and the United States Supreme Court.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
I am a graduate of Middlesex School, Concord, Massachusetts (1967), Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts (BA 1972) and The Washington College of Law of The American University, Washington, D.C. (JD 1982).
In addition to experience gained in my own practice, my legal experience includes a year clerking for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, two and one-half years practicing environmental and governmental contracts law in the Washington, D.C. and California law firm of McKenna, Conner and Cuneo, and two and one-third years practicing corporate, securities and franchise law in the Portland, Maine firm of Drummond, Woodsum, Plimpton and MacMahon.
After leaving Drummond, Woodsum in July, 1989, I spent six years working as Development Director for the Maine Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. While serving in that position, I became very familiar with charitable remainder trusts, state and federal gift and estate tax laws and various means of combining charitable giving with tax advantages for the donor and his or her family.
MEMBERSHIPS: CHARITABLE and BUSINESS INVOLVEMENTS
I am a member of the Maine State Bar Association and former chairman of its Trusts and Estate Section. I am also a member of the Cumberland County Bar Association, as well as the Maine Estate Planning Council.
I serve as Treasurer of the Nine Wicket Foundation of Portland, Maine, a private charitable foundation. I am the immediate past chairman and member of the Steering Committee of the Committee of 100 of the Portland Museum of Art. I am a member of the Board of Trustees of the Portland Conservatory of Music and a member of the nominating committee of the Victoria Society of Maine.
Finally, I serve as President of The Claremont, Inc., a family business that operates a summer resort hotel in Southwest Harbor, Maine.
