 Law Office Summary

I am a sole practitioner based in Portland, Maine whose legal practice is devoted to the representation of individuals, couples and families with respect to matters falling generally under the headings of estate planning, probate, charitable giving, non-profit organizations and real estate. I have been engaged in this practice for nearly ten years.

My practice has involved the preparation of and/or advice concerning wills and codicils, revocable and irrevocable private trusts, charitable trusts, limited and durable powers of attorney, post-nuptial agreements and estate and gift tax returns. I have assisted clients in the establishment of charitable remainder trusts and a private foundation. I have represented clients in the probating of estates in Maine with respect to a wide variety of issues that can arise in the course of probate. These issues have included, among others, the extent of the Personal Representative?s authority, the inclusion or exclusion of assets from the decedent?s taxable estate, agreements and disagreements among estate beneficiaries regarding the distribution of estate assets and the possible removal of Personal Representatives from office.

I have also advised clients concerning the impact on their situation of the federal estate and gift tax system, the Maine estate tax, Maine?s Uniform Transfers to Minors Act, Maine?s laws regarding testate and intestate succession and durable financial powers of attorney, and the Uniform Health-Care Decisions Act, as enacted in Maine. In addition, I have advised clients concerning Massachusetts laws regarding intestate succession and the Massachusetts estate tax, as well as the District of Columbia?s laws regarding testate and intestate succession and the D.C. estate tax.

In the field of real estate law, I have assisted clients in conveying and purchasing both residential and undeveloped real estate, and in creating a conservation easement. I have drafted commercial leases for clients and provided advice regarding the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of corporate organization.
