Automobile accidents give rise to both civil and criminal actions. A lack of driving skill, traffic violations, a state of intoxication, bad road conditions, and vehicles in disrepair often lead to automobile accidents.

The interests of a victim of an automobile accident are well protected by insurance laws, and Colorado law requires every vehicle owner to hold an insurance policy on his vehicle.

Automobile accidents usually give rise to personal injury suits. A court will determine not only who was at fault but also the percentage of responsibility afforded to each party to the suit in those circumstances in which both drivers contributed to the accident to some degree. Where fault has been apportioned, the payment of damages, whether by insurance companies or the parties, will be apportioned as well.
