Steve received his undergraduate degree from American University in 1971, and graduated from the Washington College of Law at American University in 1974 where he received numerous academic awards. After graduation, he served as a law clerk to New Hampshire Federal District Court Judge Hugh H. Bownes from 1974-1976. Upon completion of his clerkship, Steve returned to Washington , D.C. where he served as legal counsel to United States Senator John A Durkin from 1976-1977. In 1977, Bill Shaheen, who had been appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of New Hampshire, hired Steve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. Steve and Bill served together for 4 years. They have worked together ever since.

While at the United States Attorneys Office, Steve successfully tried over 20 trials and led the office's white-collar prosecutions in the areas of mail fraud, tax fraud and evasion. He successfully prosecuted the first Medicare/Medicaid fraud case in the courts of New Hampshire .

After leaving the United States Attorneys office, Steve began an active and diverse trial practice. He has obtained acquittals for clients charged with tax fraud, bank fraud, as well as conspiracy charges in the federal courts of New Hampshire and Massachusetts . He has also successfully defended clients in criminal trials throughout the state courts of New Hampshire . In conjunction with his trial work, Steve has had significant success in representing individual and corporate clients in pre-indictment matters. In numerous high publicity investigations, Steve's active and effective representation has resulted in no criminal charges being brought against the firm's clients. Because of these efforts, his work has been recognized since 1991 in The Best Lawyers in America for Criminal Defense as well as achieving the Highest Rating in Legal Directory Martindale-Hubbell (AV).

Steve also has a very successful civil trial practice, with a present emphasis on complex business litigation, including multi-district litigation. He also has a very active practice representing lawyers before New Hampshire 's Professional Conduct Committee. Recently, he successfully defended former all-pro quarterback, Jim Kelly of the Buffalo Bills, in a libel action brought by Kelly's former attorney and agent. The jury's defense verdict was affirmed on appeal to the First Circuit Court of Appeals with Steve and partner Lucy Karl arguing the matter.  Steve and Lucy also successfully represented Jonathan Harr, author of the New York Times bestseller, A Civil Action, and his publisher, Random House, in a defamation suit. Attorney Gordon also was legal counsel to the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and, again since 1991, has had his First Amendment work recognized in The Best Lawyers of America. Most recently, Steve and Bill Christie achieved a significant victory in the First Circuit Court of Appeals, when the Court allowed their suit against the FBI for leaking confidential information to mob figures, resulting in the murder of Brian Halloran and John McIntyre.  The case is now pending in the Federal District Court of Massachusetts and our firm is lead discovery counsel for all pending cases related to the FBI's misconduct.

Arising out of his experience with the Federal Sentencing Guidelines and the needs of corporations to have effective compliance plans and having performed internal investigations on behalf of several corporations and hospitals, Steve, Arpy Saunders and Lucy Karl began the firm's Healthcare Practice Group. The practice now includes the representation of a large number of New Hampshire hospitals, as well as individual physician practice groups on an array of issues.

In the October 2003 New Hampshire Magazine listing the "ideal" New Hampshire attorney, as voted by lawyers throughout the State, Steve was recognized in two categories: "Complex Litigation" and "Criminal Law".  Steve was also recently nominated by his peers to appear in a London based publication entitled "The International Who's Who of Business Crime Lawyers 2003.
