About This Firm

About This Firm
Susan Cohen practices law to help people: at home, at work, and in their everyday lives. She focuses on family law, employment law, and small business advising. If you need an attorney, whether for Family Law, Domestic Violence, Discrimination or Wages and Hours issues, this office is here to help.

The family law practice of the Law Office of Susan G. Cohen includes all aspects of divorce, including child custody and child support, spousal support, and the division of community property and debt. Susan Cohen has experience with complex property issues, business and professional practice valuation, rights of reimbursement, and Retirement Benefits Division Court Orders (QDRO Orders). She can assist you where one spouse worked to enable the other spouse to get a professional degree and license, since this will create property issues. Susan Cohen can also help you in drafting or reviewing Pre-marital Agreements and Marital Settlement Agreements. She has experience with sensitive issues of child abuse, domestic violence, and spousal abuse. While always looking for creative solutions to help her clients reach negotiated Win-Win solutions in divorce, custody and support issues, Susan Cohen recognizes that in some cases a client needs to ask the Court to step in and make appropriate orders. When necessary, she can and will take her client's case to trial.

This approach is reflected in the firm's employment law practice as well. She has represented clients in Race Discrimination, and Racial Harassment cases, as well as Sex Discrimination, and Sexual Harassment cases. She has handled cases involving Age Discrimination, Religious Discrimination, accommodation of Religious Belief in the workplace, Disability Discrimination, and accommodation of people with disabilities in the workplace. She has experience with CalOSHA Retaliation cases (CalOSHA is California Occupational Safety and Health) and other Whistleblower cases. In these hard times, she is also helping people who want to start their own small consulting businesses so they can go into the workplace as Independent Contractors or Short Term Project Hires. Susan Cohen is experienced in using EEOC Mediation to resolve and settle employment discrimination cases. (The EEOC is the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission).

This firm serves Sacramento County, Yolo County and Solano County. Susan Cohen has also practiced in San Mateo County and Santa Clara County. She has served all of the communities of San Mateo County, including Redwood City, Atherton, Menlo Park, San Carlos, Belmont, San Mateo and the other communities of San Mateo County. She has also served all of the communities of Santa Clara County, including Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose and Campbell. Susan Cohen has also practiced in Napa County. With advance planning, she may be able to represent you in cases in the San Francisco Bay Area and Napa County, as well as in Sacramento, Yolo, and Solano Counties.

For help in any of these areas, or a general civil litigation matter, contact Susan Cohen for a Free Consultation or to find out how this office can help you with your legal needs.

Susan Cohen also advises clients regarding Severance Packages, and aids clients in deciding whether to negotiate for more favorable terms, object to illegal terms in a proposed Severance Package, or consider rejecting the Proposed Severance Package in order to pursue Discrimination or Wrongful Termination Claims.

The Cohen Law Office accepts some employment related cases on a Contingent Fee Basis. She usually requires a Flat Fee or Hourly Fee Agreement when asked to evaluate and negotiate the terms of a Severance Package.
