As the previous co-chair of Edwards Wildman's nationally recognized Private Equity & Venture Capital Group, Richard has represented a broad base of clients ranging from buyout and venture capital firms, large manufacturing and service companies, financial services companies, governmental agencies and technology-driven start-up and established companies. His clients have been publicly traded and privately owned companies.

For an extended period of time, Richard has been principally focused on handling sophisticated transaction work while serving as counsel to a number of private equity firms and companies backed by private equity firms. In such capacity he has led deal teams handling numerous mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, leveraged recapitalizations, debt and equity financings, joint ventures, mezzanine financings and venture capital investments (early and late stage) as both company counsel and investor counsel. He has also represented numerous management teams in connection with such transactions.

For more than a decade, Richard has been listed in the nationally recognized Best Lawyers in America publication. He has appeared in the 2008 Edition both in Corporate Law and in Leveraged Buyouts and Private Equity Law. He has also been included in the New England Super Lawyers listing and as Rhode Island Super Lawyer since 2007 by Thomson Reuters. Richard has also been listed in Chambers USA , Legal 500 USA and Lawdragon, as a leading buyout and venture capital lawyer.
•Richard represented a private equity firm in connection with its acquisition of a manufacturer of pressure ulcer and temperature management products.

•Richard has represented numerous management teams in various industry sectors in connection with their employment, equity ownership and related matters.

•A manufacturer of precision dispensing equipment was represented by Richard in its sale to a publicly traded industrial products company.

•Richard represented a manufacturer of industrial cutting tools in a leveraged recapitalization involving a round of new equity and a high yield offering.

•He was involved in the representation of private equity fund in the acquisition and subsequent sale of a contract lodging management services company.

•Richard represented a provider of fuel cell technology for wireless electronic devices in several venture capital financing rounds.

•He negotiated the buyout of a manufacturer and repair service provider of cable set-top boxes with operations in both the United States and Mexico. Richard also represented a private equity fund in its 2006 auction sale of such business to a private equity buyer.

•Richard negotiated a private equity firm's sale of a multinational franchisor of carpet and upholstery cleaning services to The Home Depot, Inc.

•Richard represented a private equity firm in its acquisition of a provider of diagnostic imaging management services.

•A newsletter publishing business relied on Richard's counsel in its sale to a publicly traded media company.

•He was involved in the representation of a private equity fund in the initial funding of a business formed to construct, operate and lease fiber optic telecommunications networks.

Richard has been very active in his community, he has acted as secretary and general counsel to the Rhode Island Port Authority and Economic Development Corporation: (1985-1991); Governor's Advisory Commission on Judicial Appointments (1987-1991). Rhode Island Commodores (1986-Present). He has also served as Board Member to Junior Achievement of Rhode Island, and has served the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, Board Member; Federal Affairs Committee, Chairman; Executive Orientation Committee; Investment Committee.
