With over thirty years of criminal law experience in state and federal courts, Pat Birmingham is listed in Best Lawyers in America. Pat is listed in Barry Tarlow's National Directory of Criminal Lawyers which includes only ten other Oregon practitioners.  He is also listed in Oregon Super Lawyers.  He has the highest rating given by Martindale-Hubbell (AV) and is listed in Who's Who in American Law. He is a life member of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, a member of the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice since 1975, and has been a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1980.

Pat was admitted to the state bar of California in 1975 and to the Oregon state bar in 1978. He has also been admitted to several federal district courts and the United States Supreme Court.

Pat began practicing law in 1975 as a Deputy Public Defender for Riverside County, California. From 1975 to 1978, he was selected to serve as deputy in charge and supervising attorney for satellite offices in Corona, Banning and Riverside County Juvenile Court.

From 1979 to the present, Pat has practiced law in Oregon, and limited his practice to criminal law. His practice ranges from misdemeanors, such as drunk driving, to felonies including sex, drug and murder cases.

Pat also accepts federal court cases, such as major drug cases, real estate and bank fraud.

He has been a guest speaker at legal seminars sponsored by the Oregon State Bar and the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. He has lectured on subjects including evidence, forfeiture, the defense of homicide cases and criminal trial preparation. Pat has also served as a mentor for the Multnomah County Bar Association.

Pat has tried and won virtually every kind of criminal case from drunk driving to murder.

When state or federal prosecutors investigate clients, the litigation departments of many general law firms are often unprepared for the event. Civil litigators may have only a vague notion of the culture, mores, rules and procedures of criminal investigators and prosecutors with the unhappy result that unintentional, but irreparable damage to the client's defense can occur.

He understands how to attack, mitigate and defend often messy and potentially high profile criminal cases in which clients face the prospect of bright publicity and the disgrace of conviction and federal or state prison time.

Pat has extensive experience in defending cases involving alleged drug possession and distribution, sex crimes, homicide and other felonies. These include so-called "white collar" crimes such as embezzlement, bank, wire and real estate fraud which now are receiving special attention. In fact, prosecutors may use criminal charges to make "examples" of corporate leaders and businessmen.

While Pat deals with complex criminal cases, he is equally adept at representing clients caught up in other untidy, prohibited situations. These can range from an assault after a Super Bowl party where punches are thrown in a "post-game aggravation" to the "one for the road" that winds up as a drunk driving charge.

On an altogether different but still critical level, Pat Birmingham possesses the communication savvy needed to cope with the bright, unrelenting eye of news media, which sometimes prefers accusation to accuracy.

He is experienced in responding to the press in cases that attract a high degree of public interest. He has appeared on television and has been interviewed by experienced reporters. He has contacts with local reporters and knows the unspoken "media rules" that often lead the inexperienced lawyer into disastrous public relations thickets.
