The seven attorneys at McWhirter, Bellinger & Associates and the support staff are active in the greater Midlands in a variety of volunteer efforts. At Christmas time, MB&A puts togther Salvation Army Bell Ringing Teams to ring the bell all day locations in Columbia, Orangeburg and Sumter, raising funds for emergency needs benefitting Salvation Army clients. Pat McWhirter also serves in the Salvation Army mentor program for an adult who is turning his life around. The staff works together on the field as a softball team that takes on other Columbia businesses.
Founding attorney Mr. McWhirter recently facilitated a Medical Malpractice Continuing Legal Education Seminar for attorneys around South Carolina hosted by the South Carolina Bar Association. He is an active speaker to the legal community having lectured to the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, the Judicial Conference of Supreme Court and Circuit Judges, the South Carolina Public Defender Association and the South Carolina Bar, among others.
Member attorney Thomas Bellinger, along with attorneys Joseph Dasta and Stephen Samuels regularly volunteer as moot court judges for high school and college competitions. Mr. Bellinger serves as a Workers Compensation speaker at Continuing Legal Education seminars for other attorneys and has also been active in projects at McColl First Baptist Church in Chapin. Mr. Dasta serves as a Captain in the US Army Reserves where he recently transferred to the Judge Advocate General unit. Mr. Samuels is also advisor to a Student Trial Lawyers project out of the University of South Carolina, a member of the Federalist Society and a 1999 graduate of Leadership Lexington County. Both Mr. Dasta and Mr. Samuels recently served as judges in the National Mock Trial Final Competition for High School Students.
Senior associate attorney Stacey Tarte is an adjunct professor at Orangeburg-Calhou n Technical College where she teaches Law Office Business Management. She is also a member of their Paralegal/Legal Assistant and Criminal Justice Advisory Committee whose curriculum recently received accreditation. Ms. Tarte was recently named Co-Chair of the Richland County Young Lawyers Division. She also volunteers at the Free Legal Services Clinic sponsored by South Carolina Young Lawyers. Ms. Tarte and Mr. Samuels recently hosted a free Workers' Compensation seminar open to the public in Orangeburg organized by the South Carolina Bar Association.
Managing Attorney Garland McWhirter, financially supports the Newspapers in Schools program in the Sumter school district with a corporate donation. The program promotes reading and critical thinking by students. She has also served on the advisory board for the Columbia City Ballet for many years.
Director of Marketing & Public Relations, Roxanne Rhodes was recently named to the Resource Advisory Board of Palmetto Legal Services, a non-profit organization which provides legal services to the poor. She was recently appointed as a Richland County representative to the Greater Columbia Community Relations Board. Ms. Rhodes is also active in other Richland County affairs, serving as Co-Chair for the Public Awareness and Citizen Participation Committee for the Comprehensive Land Use Plan and the Citizen's Advisory Board for Animal Control Issues. She is also Vice President of her neighborhood association and founder of their Crime Watch group. Ms. Rhodes is active at Trinity United Methodist Church on the Board of Trustees, Worship Work Committee and a singer and flutist with the Chancel Choir.
