My work is focused on helping people get through divorce who are able to be reasonably cooperative and want to stay that way. In that respect, I'm different from the typical divorce lawyer, who is more accustomed to representing one party in an adversarial divorce. I'm also different from the typical general practitioner who does a little divorce, a little criminal, and a little personal injury. My practice is limited to divorce and divorce-related issues.
I almost never go to court. I file all my uncontested divorces in Talladega County (you can find out why at www.divorceinfo.com/whytalladega.htm). I correspond with the court by mail and (when documents are irreplaceable) by UPS 2nd Day Air. I spend most of my time in my office talking to people, helping them find ways to get through this dreary, cruddy business of divorce so they can move on with their lives. You can wear a tie or hose to come to see me, but I almost never wear a tie, and it's been quite some time since I wore hose.
There's a complete description of what you should expect, and what information you will need to bring, when you come to see me for uncontested divorce, at www.divorceinfo.com/uncontesteddivorcewithlee.htm.
What some clients need is something called coaching. This is a way you can get straight answers to your questions and keep the cost to a minimum. What you would do is to set up a coaching session with me, come armed with your questions, and I'll answer them. You may also want to use me as a coach if your spouse's lawyer has prepared documents for an uncontested divorce and you just need me to look over the documents and help you understand what they mean before you sign.
Coaching is different from an "introductory consultation" because I wouldn't be trying to convince you to hire me as your lawyer, just answering your questions as honestly and completely as I can.
My charge for coaching is $200 per hour, figured in tenths of an hour. I'm totally comfortable with a coaching session that lasts just 1/10 of an hour (at a charge of $20) if that's all the information you need, although a more typical length for a coaching session is an hour to an hour and a half. Here's the link to the page on coaching: www.divorceinfo.com/coaching.htm.
I also function as a divorce mediator. In my role as mediator, I maintain neutrality between the husband and the wife, acting as a facilitator to help them resolve the issues that need to be decided so they can then file an uncontested divorce. There's lots of information on Divorceinfo.com about mediation. Here's the best starting point: www.divorceinfo.com/mediation.htm.
