Michael Edwards is the regional managing partner of the Las Vegas office. He focuses his practice on the defense and trial of architects' and engineers' liability, product liability matters, environmental litigation/remediation, construction litigation, all areas of tort litigation and employment issues. He has litigated matters dealing with design/construction defects, toxic torts, environmental contamination, product liability, personal injury and general liability matters. Mike is a frequent lecturer to insurance company claim departments, design professionals, and corporate clients on risk prevention, contracts, insurance issues and related employment matters.
Mike produces superior results for his clients by quickly and effectively identifying the course of action best suited to each case. His broad knowledge and experience come into play at every step, enhancing the probability of success in settlement or at trial.

Areas of Focus

Employment & Labor
On behalf of employers, Mike has extensive experience defending cases brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act, the FMLA, the ADA and its 2008 amendment, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act, and state law fair employment statutes. He has represented clients in claims of sexual harassment, discrimination and wrongful termination before the Nevada Equal Rights Commission as well as in state and federal courts. He also handles tort, contract and whistleblower claims. In addition, Mike has successfully defended employers in charges of discrimination filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), U.S. Department of Labor and various state agencies throughout the country.

Mike regularly advises employers on personnel issues, such as hiring and firing, layoffs, disciplinary actions, compliance with state and federal wage and hour laws, harassment investigations and covenants not to compete. He also works with clients to draft and implement employment policies designed to minimize the risk of employment litigation.

Professional Liability
Mike has a broad range of professional liability experience defending traditional professionals (such as attorneys, accountants, and real estate and insurance agents and brokers) to new professionals under miscellaneous professional liability policies. He also has extensive experience representing design professionals and contractors/subcontractors in claims brought by homeowners' associations and personal injury claims arising out of construction site accidents and general premises liability matters. His client list includes architects and engineers and design professionals in connection with commercial, residential and public works projects; financial planners; plastic surgeons and dentists; and businesses ranging from Internet services to landscaping and tree services to morticians. In addition, Mike represents general contractors and subcontractors in their roles as certifiers of equipment and personnel. Notably, Mike has a reputation for successfully defending his cases on appeal.

General Liability
Mike represents insured and self-insured commercial businesses, restaurants, transportation companies, schools, and public and private landlords. He defends a variety of personal injury and property damage claims.

Product Liability
Mike's product litigation experience includes the defense of matters relating to health care products, children's products, asbestos manufacturers, restaurant franchises, and automobile and motorcycle liability. It also includes manufacturers in the industrial and mechanical machinery fields. Mike has litigated matters in Nevada and California involving issues dealing with product defects, design/construction defects, personal injury and general liability matters.

In his construction practice, Mike is involved with extensive representation of developers, subcontractors, architects, engineers and other design professionals in connection with commercial, residential and public works projects. He also has extensive experience in representing design professionals and contractors in claims brought by homeowners' associations and for construction defects and individual personal injury and wrongful death claims arising out of construction site accidents, mold and general premises liability matters. Mike has successfully managed more than 300 cases to successful conclusions through mediation, arbitration and/or trial.

Mike has defended security guards and security companies involving claims of negligent hiring of security staff, improper security staff training, claims of insufficient security and claims of excess force. Michael has defended security staffs retained to provide security services for professional sports teams at large venues and major concerts, as well as security staffs retained to provide security at shopping malls, retail establishments and service stations.

Architects & Engineers
Mike has extensive experience in representing design professionals and contractors in claims brought by owners, contractors and homeowners' associations. These matters include residential construction and all types of commercial projects, including hotel/casino, retail and public works projects. Mike has successfully managed more than 600 such cases to successful conclusion by way of mediation, arbitration and/or trial. Clients include architects; landscape architects; and structural, civil, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical engineers. Mike has also handled matters of loss prevention. His litigated matters include residential construction and all types of commercial projects including hotel/casino, retail and public works projects. He is panel counsel for most major carriers providing A/E coverage for design professionals.

Insurance & Reinsurance Coverage
In insurance coverage cases, Mike's approach is to engage in early assessment and develop recommendations designed to resolve disputed issues related to the insurer's duties to indemnify and defend. This may include seeking declaratory relief in state or federal court, as appropriate. For matters involving alleged bad faith, Mike is especially proactive and cognizant of potential discovery issues related to handling of the underlying file by the insurer and appointed defense counsel.

Using keen insight and a strong working knowledge of the transportation industry, Mike handles sensitive matters with respect for the bottom line of an industry under siege from high judgments, rising tolls, skyrocketing fuel costs, and increases in fines and fees. He is committed to staying abreast of legislative, regulatory, technological and other developments that will have an impact on his transportation clients. Mike is also part of several trucking company 24-hour emergency response/site control teams.
