Elder abuse takes many forms. Sometimes it is neglect. Other times it is active, physical abuse or the overuse of sedating drugs. Because elders often require full time care, it is usually impossible to catch the abuser in the act. Instead, those responsible for the wellbeing of their loved ones must be vigilant for the signs and symptoms of elder abuse.
These include bed sores or ulcers, unexplained weight loss or bruising. Other warning signs include improper personal care, such as a failure to keep an incontinent person's personal hygene items clean. Smells of human waste are often a warning sign that a particular facility is abusing those it is entrusted to protect. Finally, staff theft is a sad, but common occurrence.
If you need help or if someone you love is a victim of this problem, please contact us. There are many ways in which we can help, from conducting an investigation to seeking the help of state protective agencies. In certain cases, we can take action directly against the abuser. We believe that all of our elders deserve to live their lives in the full dignity that our society promises, and we will do all that we can to help when an abusive person or facility tries to rob our elders of the dignity which is their right.
