Siro & Moyer Successfully Settles Slip & Fall at Local Hospital Health Enhancement Center for $250,000. 

In May 2004, attorney Rik Siro settled a case involving the dangerous condition of a bathroom in a local hospital's health enhancement center.  Plaintiff, an active elderly woman, participated in several classes including aqua aerobatics. As she was walking into the bathroom from the pool plaintiff slipped on the flooring, and suffered serious injuries when she fell. Plaintiff claimed that the bathroom flooring material created a dangerous condition because it was slick when wet and smooth in contrast to the textured, porous floors in the other wet areas of the pool and locker room.   

Siro & Moyer Successfully Settles Gender and Retailation Case Against Local Transportation Company 

In August 2004, attorney Heidi Moyer settled a case involving a female employee who reported to upper management that her direct supervisor treated female and male employees differently and was subsequently terminated.

Siro & Moyer Successfully Settles Motorcycle Accident Case With Negligent Driver Talking On Cell Phone  

In August 2004, attorney Rik Siro settled a motorcycle accident case involving the careless driver of a van, who changed lanes while talking on his cellular phone.  Driver pulled into the side of the plaintiff motorcyclist , a recent retiree on his way out of town to celebrate his wedding anniversary.  This negligent act caused plaintiff to lose control of his motorcycle and left plaintiff with severe road rash from sliding across the pavement.

Blumer Nally & Siro Successfully Arbitrates Negligent Highway Design Case Against the Missouri Department of Transportation

On November 7, 2003, attorney Rik Siro successfully represented a young man who suffered serious brain damage and other physical injuries in a car accident on 291 Highway in September of 1999. The arbitrator found that a transition from 4 lanes down to 2 lanes on a stretch of the highway was negligently designed over 27 years ago, and as a result, in heavy rains it became a dangerous condition for the driving public, with an increased likelihood of hydroplaning and loss of control. He also found that this hazardous condition caused or contributed to the young man's catastrophic injuries. The arbitrator determined that the young man's damages were in the amount of $7.5 Million, but was forced to reduce the damages to the maximum cap of $100,000 as required by Missouri's sovereign immunity law.

Blumer Nally & Siro and Attorney Andy Russell Obtain $325,000 Medical Malpractice Verdict in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri.

On November 6, 2003, attorneys Andy Russell and Rik Siro obtained a jury verdict for their clients in a medical malpractice claim against a Columbia Orthopaedic Surgeon. The jury found that the surgeon performed an unnecessary carpal tunnel release surgery on plaintiff in November of 1997, and as a result, she suffered a painful and debilitating injury known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), or Regional Complex Pain Syndrome, significantly impairing the young mother's ability to use her dominant right hand.

Blumer Nally & Siro Settles Dangerous Premises Case Against Starlight Theater Association and the City of Kansas City, Missouri for $375,000.

In June, 2003, attorney Rik Siro settled a case involving the dangerous condition of a crosswalk in Swope Park, linking one of the main parking lots to the Starlight Theater. Plaintiff, an active woman in her seventies, came with her daughter for dinner and a show, and parked in a handicap parking spot only feet away from the crosswalk. As she was crossing the street she stepped into a sizeable hole filled with rainwater, and suffered serious injuries when she fell to the pavement. Plaintiffs claimed that the crosswalk hole developed over a significant time period and defendants were negligent in failing to inspect, maintain and repair the property for the safety of the public and their patrons.

Blumer Nally & Siro Obtains Verdict in Sex Harassment Retaliation Case Against City of Kansas City, Missouri

On April 11, 2003, attorneys Heidi Moyer & Rik Siro obtained a jury verdict for their client against the City of Kansas City for retaliatory termination. The jury found that the Plaintiff, who was at the end of her post-hiring probationary period as a Traffic Control Officer at the Kansas City Airport, was improperly fired by the City in retaliation for her complaints that she was being sexually harassed by cab drivers working the airport.

                                                       

Rik Siro receives the Missouri Bar Association's Tom Cochran Community Service Award

At the 2003 Annual Meeting of the Missouri Bar Attorneys Rik Siro and Teresa Woody were presented with the Tom Cochran Community Service Award. This award is presented to Missouri lawyers whose service over the years has enhanced the quality of life in their communities. Rik Siro has served in various leadership roles with the Mattie Rhodes Counseling & Art Center, including his recently completed term as President of the Board of Directors. He has a long been involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Kansas City, first as a volunteer Big Brother, then as a Board member and Board President, and now serves as a member of the Advisory Board.

Heidi Moyer is the recipient of the 2002 Kansas Bar Association's Outstanding Young Lawyer Award

The Outstanding Young Lawyer award recognizes the efforts of a Kansas Bar Association Young Lawyers Section member who had rendered meritorious service to the legal profession, the community, or the Kansas Bar Association.  Heidi Moyer was a founding member of the Wyandotte County Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section in 1993, eventually serving as president.  As president, she organized a project to provide targeted legal information to home-bound citizens.  Ms. Moyer served as the statewide coordinator for the YLS Kansas High School Mock Trial Project from 2000-2002.  Ms. Moyer is also a board member for the Budget and Financial Management Association, an organization that provides budgeting and bill paying assistance to disabled, homeless, and elderly individuals.
