State v. Maxie, No. 2017-92-C.A., Rhode Isl
Supreme Court (June 22, 2018) (vacating conviction for child sex trafficking because the statute failed to state a crime).TransactionsOn June 22, 2018, the Rhode Island Supreme Court reversed Curtis Maxie's conviction under the State's Child Sex Trafficking Act. The legislature omitted essential language which would have made the disgusting conduct a crime. Hard cases make good law. The principle here is that the law has to state clearly what acts are criminal.
